Losing a baby in pregnancy is one of the hardest things a person can experience, whether it happens a few weeks into gestation or because of a complication during birth. It is traumatic. It is common to feel an overwhelming avalanche of emotions:

  • depression after miscarriage

  • Intense grief

  • Anxiety

  • Mistrust of hope

  • Self-blame

  • Second guessing everything you did during the pregnancy

  • Fear of it happening again

  • Feeling like your body failed you or like you are a failure as a woman or partner

  • Anger

  • Confusion

  • Hopelessness

Most of all it is painful.

Then there is waiting for the loss to be physically complete. This is tortuous and may require medical intervention, which can add to the trauma. There can be added layers of trauma for folks in states where such intervention (medically necessary abortion) is banned.

If people knew of your pregnancy, you field a lot of concerned questions while dealing with a miscarriage. Many well-meaning loved ones say things like “it happens all the time” or “I’m sure you’ll get pregnant again.” If others did not know, you may experience your pain in isolation.

Finding Pregnancy Loss Support Is Important

If you have a partner, the loss will affect them too, in their own way. It can negatively impact the relationship when you need it most because neither partner feels fully understood in their pain. One partner may put on a strong face and bury their pain to support the partner who is letting their emotions show, but both people need support.

If the pregnancy did not come easy or you struggled with infertility, it can be even more scary and hopeless to think about trying again. If you get pregnant again, it is difficult not to be riddled with anxiety the whole time. Decisions are overcast with fear. You fret about when to announce the pregnancy. It’s hard to let yourself feel hope, joy, or excitement - they feel dangerous after such a loss.
